EU261 flight compensation calculator

Delayed, cancelled or denied boarding? Answer a few questions and see whether you may be owed 250, 400 or 600 euros per passenger. Nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere.

What happened?
Was your flight covered by EU rules?

UK flights have similar but separate rules (UK261).

How far was the flight?

Distance is measured in a straight line between the airports. For example, Amsterdam to Madrid is about 1,480 km, and Amsterdam to Athens is about 2,160 km.

How late did you arrive at your final destination?

What counts is the delay when the aircraft doors opened at your final destination.

What reason did the airline give?

Technical faults are usually not treated as extraordinary. Weather and air traffic control usually are.

This calculator gives general information based on EU Regulation 261/2004. It is not legal advice and the airline or a national authority makes the final decision. Rules have conditions and exceptions, and the details of your case may change the result.

How the calculator works

The rules in short

EU Regulation 261/2004 gives passengers fixed compensation when a flight is delayed by three hours or more at arrival, cancelled at short notice, or when boarding is denied against your will. The amount depends on the distance: 250 euros up to 1,500 km, 400 euros for 1,500 to 3,500 km, and 600 euros above 3,500 km.

What the calculator checks

It checks whether your flight is covered, the distance band, the delay or cancellation notice, and the reason the airline gave. It then shows the amount per passenger and explains the result in plain language.

What it cannot know

It cannot see the real cause of your delay, the airline's records or the exact distance of your route. For borderline cases, ask the airline for the reason in writing before deciding what to do.

Time limits

Claims have time limits that depend on the country where you claim, from about one year to several years. Do not wait longer than necessary.

Frequently asked questions

How much compensation can I get under EU261?

250, 400 or 600 euros per passenger, depending on the flight distance. On long flights outside the EU the amount can be halved when you arrive between three and four hours late.

Does the compensation apply to every passenger on the booking?

Yes. The amount is per passenger, so a family of four may be owed four times the amount, as long as everyone had a confirmed booking.

Do I get compensation if the delay was caused by bad weather?

Usually not. Severe weather is generally an extraordinary circumstance. You still have the right to care, and to a refund or a replacement flight if the flight is cancelled.

Can I claim if I booked through a travel agent or a comparison site?

Yes. Your rights are against the airline that operated the flight, whoever sold you the ticket.

Is this calculator a guarantee?

No. It is an estimate based on general rules. The airline or a national enforcement body makes the final decision, and the facts of your case matter.
